Abstract

In the face of rapid urbanization and population growth, countries worldwide are confronting the challenges of climate shocks and stresses. Heatwaves, heavy rainfall leading to flooding, sea-level rise, storm surges, cyclones, droughts, windstorms, and other climate impacts are exerting significant pressures on urban systems and placing communities and the built environment at risk. To mitigate these risks, it is essential for communities to build resilience and prepare for such events. The built environment must possess the capacity to withstand, absorb, adapt, and recover from the impacts of hazards in a timely and effective manner. This chapter explores the dimensions and components of climate change resilience in the built environment, emphasizing the various types of resilience, thematic areas, dimensions, and capitals that contribute to overall resilience. By examining the diverse aspects of built environment resilience, this chapter provides insights into the multifaceted nature of resilience planning and underscores the importance of holistic approaches to address the complex challenges posed by climate change. By enhancing the understanding of resilience themes and dimensions, this chapter aims to empower decision-makers, urban planners, and stakeholders in formulating strategies and policies that foster the resilience of the built environment in the face of a changing climate.
