Abstract

In the face of escalating climate change challenges, the role of urban planning in mitigating its impacts has become increasingly crucial. Effective urban planning plays a pivotal role in addressing the diverse challenges posed by climate change and enhancing cities' capacity to withstand and respond to its adverse effects. This chapter explores the vital role of urban planning in building climate resilience within the built environment. It begins by highlighting the wide-ranging impacts of climate change on urban areas, emphasizing their vulnerability and the urgent need for resilience. The chapter then delves into various urban planning strategies that can effectively address these impacts, such as land-use planning, transportation planning, and green infrastructure development. Furthermore, it examines the significance of risk assessment and adaptation in urban planning, highlighting the importance of integrating climate considerations into decision-making processes. The policy and governance aspects of urban planning are also discussed, including national and international frameworks, multilevel governance structures, and financial mechanisms for climate-resilient urban development. The chapter presents successful case studies that showcase climate-responsive urban planning strategies implemented in different contexts. Finally, it concludes by discussing the challenges, opportunities, and the critical need for knowledge sharing and capacity building in addressing climate change through urban planning.
