Prabhath H. Kurup

VISITING RESEARCHERS

Visiting PhD Student (May 2025-November 2025)

Biography

Prabhath H. Kurup is a doctoral researcher at the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR), Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kerala, India. With a strong academic background in atmospheric and space sciences, he has engaged in multiple research projects focusing on numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, ensemble modeling, and downscaling of CMIP6 global climate projections using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. His current work emphasizes assimilating observations from various instruments into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to enhance forecasting accuracy.

Research Interests

Prabhath H. Kurup's research is centered on improving the accuracy and reliability of numerical weather prediction through advanced data assimilation techniques and ensemble forecasting. He is particularly interested in the use of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and its data assimilation system (WRFDA) for simulating extreme weather events and localized coastal phenomena. His work also explores the validation of high-resolution forecasts for weather-sensitive communities, such as artisan fishers in southwestern India, and the development of sector-specific forecast products that support impact-based decision-making. His interests include the dynamical downscaling of CMIP6 climate model outputs using WRF to assess regional climate impacts under future scenarios.
